“At every opportunity, I wanted to play football.”

Have you ever wondered how the top class midfielders make the game look so easy? For me, it’s the little things that often go unnoticed, that set the great midfielders apart from the truly special ones. We recently posted a video where Ilkay Gündogan gave us some tips on how to be a better midfielder, which inspired me to expand on that, and give you my top 4 tips for becoming a better midfielder.
Predator-Energy-Mode-Pack

I’m aware that ‘The Lion King’ was released 24 years ago, however one line in that film always stayed with me on the football pitch – “I’m surrounded by idiots”. If you’re also a central midfielder, I guess you can understand where I’m coming from? They say that a football match is mostly won in midfield, and in this blog I’m going to try to give you some tips to help you make the game look a little easier, and also win your midfield battle. Sound good? Keep reading to find out!
Step 1 – Technical ability (Control, First Touch and Passing)

My manager used to tell us that losing the ball is the worst thing you can do on a football pitch. “Treat it like you love it, look after it and it will look after you.” Admittedly, this was a weird thing to say to an 8 year old who just wanted to run around and kick a ball, but it makes total sense. The best way to not lose the ball, is to improve your technical ability. Do drills designed to improve your first touch and passing. Your first touch should always put the ball about a yard away from you, and not near the other player. This will give you the time to look up, and pick out a pass to your team mate.

Step 2 – Mentality

This is becoming a theme in my blogs, but that’s because it’s so important. Preparing well mentally for a game will allow you to step onto the pitch with nothing on your mind except what YOU are going to do. Your job is to dominate the middle of the pitch and you are going to be up for a fight if necessary. Coming up against a player that has a higher technical ability than you can be demoralising, but as I’ve said before – “Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard”.
predator adidas

Step 3 – Awareness

In my opinion one of the most important skills you can possess as a midfielder is awareness of what is happening around you, and awareness of where all of your teammates are. The best players are the quickest thinkers, and what better way to demonstrate this by knowing exactly what you’re going to do with the ball, before you even receive the pass? Look all around you at all times, even when you have the ball. Paul Scholes was a master of this art, and made it look simple.
Step 4 – Create Space

All the best players seem to be always standing in space – why outmuscle your opponent when you can out-think them? There is space that can be exploited in-between the defensive and midfield lines, all you need to do is find it, and go there. This means a lot of movement to place yourself between opposition players to create a clear passing line as an outlet for your team when under pressure. When the pass is released, you can move towards the ball and use your body to shield the ball. You can then use the skills I mentioned above to control the ball, shield it from your opponent, be aware of where your teammates are, and pass the ball. This will keep the attack moving into the final third of the pitch. I personally think Kevin De Bruyne is a great example of a midfielder who finds space well and exploits it.

So that was 4 steps on how to become a better midfielder. I hope you can use some of the ideas I mentioned to help you step-up your game!

2. West Ham Away Shirt 2018/19
west_ham_united_18_19_umbro_third_kit_b

We can’t get past West Ham’s new Away Shirt made by Umbro, just stunning. The blue colour is not something that you would connect with West Ham due to the other Premier League rivals from London. But the blue details have always been a part of the West Hams Shirt, and when the club used a darker blue shirt when they were founded in 1892 as Thames Ironworks. The new Away Shirt pays tribute to foundation of the club, while rocking glolden details on the crest and Umbro logo, and Bordeaux on the collar and sleeves.

1. Lazio Home Shirt 2018/19

Did you see this one coming? On first place of the Top 10 list we find the awesome and stunning Lazio Home Shirt. Lazio has always been known of rocking light blue home kits with white details. This year Macron has taken the Home Shirt to whole new level, with adding the well-known eagle on the front as a big detail. The eagle is also a synonym for Lazio and is used by the club due to their nickname le Aquile, meaning the Eagles. The eagle print splits the shirt into two halves where the upper part is white and lower is light blue.

Nike drop one last Mercurial Superfly 360 colourway of the summer as the Swoosh go deep into pre-season stoppage time. Landing as one half of the “Rising Fire” pack along with the PhantomVSN, it’s a design that reps in red.

For now, the Rising Fire pack is only available in the United States, with the Swoosh set to make the duo of boots available in Europe before the end of the month. It’s worth pointing out that the Hypervenom and Tiempo aren’t part of this new pack – the Hypervenom’s days look to be numbered in the Nike line-up, and the Tiempo would’ve been a bit of a third wheel here.

The “Team Red” colourway wraps around the Nike Mercurial Superfly and Vapor 360 for a familiar feel, and one that will be adopted well across all levels. adidas nemeziz 18+ play test review

After making a debut on full display during the 2018 World Cup in Russia we’re slipping on the next generation Nemeziz 18+ to see where adidas have taken the silo. Another laceless boot. We seriously need to start thinking about re-naming this series…

adidas nemeziz energymode
adidas nemeziz energymode

The Nemeziz landed on the scene as one of the most intriguing releases that we’ve seen from adidas for some time. A mishmash of medical bandages wrapped around Primeknit and a collar that looked like nothing we had seen before… it split opinion. Now, we get the second iteration of the Nemeziz, with a revamped collar, a few tweaks to the upper, and perhaps more of an idea on what purpose it serves on the market.

The Nemeziz is loud and isn’t shy about being one of the most unique boots on the market. The back and forth arrow design will be fun to see moving forward, and the two tone colour combo is strong. However, until you hit the heel and forefoot, we could totally believe that this was just a colour update of the 2017 Nemeziz. At a glance, not much has changed.

adidas nemeziz 18 orange
adidas nemeziz 18 orange

The medial section of the boot is still covered in the stretch Agility Bandages, but now adidas has heightened the collar and stepped away from the bumpy AgilityKnit on the forefoot to the smoother feel of AgilityWeave. The most noticeable difference is the Dual Lock collar that, while it starts of with the deep v-shaped cut of the original Nemeziz, now has a raised portion on the instep side of the boot.

One of the impressive aspects of all of the adidas laceless boots is that, despite needing a boot tailored to a perfect fit without laces, they’ve been able to consistently deliver comfort. The Nemeziz 18+ is no different.

adidas nemeziz 18
adidas nemeziz 18

The comfort for the Nemeziz 18+ is taken straight from the soft nature of the materials used to craft the boot. The Agility Bandages that make up most of the upper are incredibly soft, and they couple together with a comfortable padding for an immediate harnessed feel when you slip them on.

The area under the tongue is a stretchy material that helps the boot keep its shape and allows you to get your foot into the boot, but it’s still soft. Every other part of the boot is lined with an incredibly plush liner… very similar to what we’ve seen adidas use on the original X PureSpeed and the first Nemeziz (albeit, a bit thicker this time around). Add in a soft liner in the heel, and you’ve got a boot that’s ready for takeoff as soon as you take it out of the box.

Somehow, the Nemeziz 18+ is able to provide an immediate fit and a comfort that most boots don’t possess until they’ve been broken in for quite some time. The best part is that the forefoot of the boot will only soften up as the outer synthetic softens. Out of all of the adidas boots on the market (that aren’t made of kangaroo leather), the Nemeziz currently sets the bar for comfort… whether you’re looking for boots with laces or boots without.

The original Nemeziz was an impressive marvel that caught us off guard with an intriguing concept. The idea of wrapping bandages made sense, but the execution spelled it out. However, we would have loved a better construction around the connection of the bandage strips and some better lockdown…

adidas nemeziz 18 store
adidas nemeziz 18 store

The beauty of the Nemeziz has always been time on the ball. While the forefoot is a little bit stiff on the ball at first, it softens up, factors in with the padding and Agility Bandages to provide an incredible feel on the ball. Something that adidas has done with their laceless boots is found a way to give an incredibly soft touch with materials that, in order to keep your foot in place without laces, should be rigid and thick.

The Nemeziz 18+ continues that, and it shows while you’re running at pace or trying to skip between defenders. The ball never feels dampened against your foot, and there’s always a great feel on the ball. Don’t come swimming in the Nemeziz waters if you’re looking for an extremely thin and barefoot feel. The AgilityWeave on the forefoot and the Agility Bandages on both sides flow seamlessly in terms of feel, and while the Agilityweave is a bit thicker than the PrimeKnit used on the last Nemeziz, it’s so small of a change that it doesn’t make the feel on the ball any less impressive.

adidas nemeziz 18 sale
adidas nemeziz 18 sale

The area where the tongue would sit on a typical boot feels fantastic when you strike through a shot or cross-field ball. Despite the nice bit of padding that’s present throughout the boot, you still get the nice warm sensation that every player craves when they put their foot through a proper strike. You’re going to feel this whenever you receive a pass, make a pass, or address the ball in any way across the entirety of the boot.

One of the biggest issues that all of the laceless adidas boots face is lockdown. Being secure when you plant and attempt to make quick turns, which always feels like something that a boot without laces can’t achieve. The newest Nemeziz faces the same struggle, and, while it’s the best attempt we’ve seen at solving this issue from adidas, it still doesn’t give the amount of response and lockdown you get from a well-laced boot.

adidas nemeziz 18 online
Perhaps there will be a moment when we finally see a laceless boot that can truly compete against laced options in this regard, but only the X 18+ has come close to this so far. Don’t expect to come out of your boot when executing a quick pivot or rolling your ankle every time that you cut, but there’s still a bit of ever-so-slight movement that keeps the Nemeziz 18+ from being perfect.

The stud pattern and build under the Nemeziz remains unchanged from the last model. Crescent shaped studs help allow you to cut into the ground quickly and push off without feeling stuck down in the muck. While adidas aren’t formally calling this an AG/FG set-up, the length and shape of the studs left us enjoying the traction whether we were playing on firm ground pitches or delving into a surface that was of a high standard of artificial.
adidas nemeziz 18 mens

To be totally honest, there isn’t much difference between the Nemeziz 18 and Nemeziz 17. There still isn’t a perfect solution for ultimate lockdown on the Nemeziz when you’ve tossed the laces to the side. The collar is also going to divide opinion, but we rather enjoyed the unique feel that this boot provides. We’re not giving our pair away anytime soon, but we’d be lying if we didn’t say that this boot still has a bit of room to improve before perfection.

There’s also still a bit of confusion around who this boot suits. We’d answer that by saying it’s a more comfortable, more agile alternative to the X series. Still fast, but with a leather interior rather than the racing seats. The upper does provide a better feel on the ball than the previous generation, the boot has improved its lockdown, but they’re all minor upgrades that are barely noticeable. Still, improvement sip progression.

Nike Phantom Vision Elite review

It is a new style of boot designed for precision and those all important split-decision moments. Think fast-paced games when everything is on the line. Since release, the Nike Phantom Vision has caused quite a stir with fans. Not solely because they are a replacement for the Magista series, but because they feature key elements we haven’t seen from Nike before now.

Nike Phantom Vision Soleplate
Nike Phantom Vision Soleplate

Comfort is high on the agenda, with Nike building them from the inside-out. In other words, foot shape and feel through a 90 minute game got serious consideration. They started the process by creating an internal Quadfit mesh, before focusing on the outer layers of the boot. The end result is intended to be a game changer. But, how does that all play out in reality?

Right away, it is apparent that Nike are trying something very different with this release. From their focus on comfort to building from the inside-out, the design team definitely looked at the Phantom Vision in a very different way. The intro blackout colorway is extremely slick, offering players a taste of what to expect without giving up final design cues. This is another first from Nike that bucks the norm, while giving you something to get excited about!

Yes, the Magista series has been retired, with the its replacement. But, that is not to say it is a direct replacement. Both silos are very different in design and target market. If you were a big fan of the Magista series, now is time to stock up on pairs.

Rather than having an individual “Quadfit Mesh” section, I’m going to focus on it here along with the fit and comfort. It makes more sense since it plays such a huge role in how these boots feel on foot. Nike started out with what is essentially a “bootie”, or an internal sleeve that your foot slips into. The idea is that this allows the fit to conforms with most any foot. Quadfit is designed to contain the foot without constricting it, while also retaining its shape over time without overstretch.

Quadfit performs well because it doesn’t have the stretch bias typically seen in woven materials. The four axes of fibers conform to the player’s foot and provide support in all directions. It works because of the unique fiber orientation as well as the separation between fibers; the gaps distribute the load of the foot and mitigate friction. The result is an incredible fit across a very broad spectrum of unique foot structures.

Nike PhantomVSN Elite Released
Nike PhantomVSN Elite Released

So, although you can’t see the Quadfit Mesh from the outside, it plays a huge role in player experience with the boot. When you slip them on for the first time, the boot absolutely hugs your foot. My first time trying them on, I found everything to be very tight, with pressure right around my foot. Through the first wear, I chose to take them off as I didn’t feel naturally fitted to them. Or maybe it had more to do with the fact that I haven’t worn such a secure fitting boot before. Either way, it took a few wears before I felt like they were as one with my feet, ready to master a 90 minute game. Inside, you also get a Nike grip insole that helps give you added security through quick turns and sharp movements. Nike do emphasize the fact they hug your foot securely in place, so I can completely verify that as accurate statement.

So, comfort for me was up in the air. For players that enjoy a snug fit, they should be absolutely perfect. You get extra stretch from both the inner and outer materials, but even so the bootie always stays locked around your foot. More on the fit below.

Without a doubt one of the key features of the Phantom Vision is the “Ghost” laces. In some of the release videos, you may have spotted players pulling the front tongue tab forward and tucking their laces in underneath. Because of the design, there is no way to see what is underneath even when you pull the layers open as wide as you can. And that is why we turn directly to Nike and the image below for more details on the actual lacing system under the knit cover. And as you can see, it only navigates across your foot twice, very unique.

The layer under the laces is part of the Quadfit mesh fit system, while there is a knit material above. The knit material above is where the Ghost tab sits, with a lot of stretch so you can pull it forward as you tighten the laces. Once you have them tied, it is very easy to stuff (or tuck) everything under the tab, hidden from view. This gives them a laceless look, with the benefit of being able to dictate how tight you want the fit to be.

My one concern with the overall design would be what happens when you want to relace them? I can’t see the process of re-looping being very easy. But then again, there isn’t a real need to relace unless the current pair in the boots breaks. There would be no reason to switch out the color or go with an extravagant design seeing as it is hidden during play.

Moving onto the collar, and what is already the one key piece we are receiving most questions about. It is actually part of the Quadfit Mesh fit system, although it doesn’t play the most important role. It is still listed as providing a dynamic fit, although not in the same fashion as any previous Nike release. Here, the material feels more like an extra sock that runs around the ankle. First time out, it was actually tough to slip into them and that was related to the narrow opening. After a few wears, it has become slightly easier, but overall the material still fits very snug. Because of its design and overall shape, I can’t see it losing its shape over time, so they should continue to fit well right through wear. Another unique feature is how you can tuck it into the boot, producing a more traditional style ankle cut design. You are not going to want to do this, but I thought it looked fun – thus the image below.

Oh boy is there a lot of texturing right throughout the upper of the Phantom Vision, all intended to enhance feel on the ball. Through the instep, in what is a triangle-shaped area, you will find a dominant raised pattern intended to improve control. Think of this element as a hybrid CTR360 addition, where Nike looks to enhance short and long-range control. The forefoot outside of the triangle also features a similar pattern, but it is much less pronounced, with the material feeling more pliable. Still, you get an almost sandpaper like feel that adds definition on the ball. In terms of touch and control, they are a dream boot. In play, I could feel the ball staying closer to my foot and the additional tacky feel allowed for more defined touches in tight spaces.

Nike PhantomVSN Unboxing
Nike PhantomVSN Unboxing

Although definitely not a power boot, they are a perfect striker or shooting style boot. The ball really pings off the surface and you get the bonus of being able to really connect with the ball, adding swerve, on more guided shots. And you also get the bonus of having 2 layers between the ball and your foot, ensuring the boot absorbs more impact than you foot!

Finally, PhantomVSN is designed to perform in the elements with ACC (All Conditions Control) coating weather-proofing the final product. So, you know they are ready for use in all-weather conditions.

Underfoot, Nike has created what is a very aggressive traction system with an almost futuristic appearance. It is very different to what we have seen them implement on other recent silo releases. The overall purpose of the traction pattern is to accommodate quick multi-directional cuts and it plays out very well in play. One of the most unusual inclusions is a set of rotational blades right under the big toe region. Each blade is offset with the intent of catching the surface through a movement easing the pressure on your foot and allowing you to focus on quick acceleration. The images below give you a better idea of the design rather than trying to describe what is where.

The all important question is how do they feel in play? I’ve got to admit, I very much enjoyed what they had to offer in all situations. There wasn’t any discomfort, with the overall pressure distributed very evenly. And the pattern seemed to grab the surface and release easily without any noticeable sticking. A quality system that I’m confident a wide variety of players will enjoy.

Final note here, the studs are housed on a lightweight, responsive plate with enhanced zonal support for the foot.

You are going to want to order true to size, or what you would normally wear in Nike boots. I definitely wouldn’t vary your size choice, because ultimately the length is very similar. And they can very easily accommodate a medium/wide fit, almost moving into the side fitting category. But there is a twist. How they plays out on feet might be different to what you expect, because of the Quadfit Mesh system and that bootie. Ultimately, they are a snug boot that really does hug your foot. If you don’t enjoy the feel of a boot locked up against your foot, they probably won’t be the ideal boot choice for you. But if you are the type of player that wants to feel completely in sync with your boot in an incredibly secured fashion, these are going to be a quality choice!

When it comes to durability, it really is tough to give an accurate answer on how long a boot will last. You have to go off smaller subset of evidence and try to make best estimates. From testing, there is 2 things I am pretty certain about here. First, the upper to soleplate joining will not separate; if it does you are probably kicking the ground more than the ball. Nike has added an extra layer of material right around the lip that locks the connection shut, not even allowing a blade of grass to wedge into during play. Huge positive, great addition. But I’m a little at odds about the durability of the upper, the second thing. Through wear, my blackout pair has scuffed in areas and you can tell they have taken a beating already. That is not to say that they won’t last an entire season, but I can see opposing player’s blades causing some issues over time!

Looking on the three lines on the Predator, X and Copa, we see the Telstar pixelated design motivated by the formal coordinate football for the 2018 World Cup. While the Nemeziz has been prepared with an iridescent impact when placing light on it, which gives a tremendous impact to shoes.

Tech-wise, shoes haven’t modified, so you get the same, amazing technological innovation which have been presented for the World Cup. Besides the new color and the lines impact, shoes are recognized by having their own exclusive soleplate. The Predator 18+ is created with a flat gold only dish, which works very well with darkening style, while the Copa 18.1 features a white candy striped style that was created to supplement the elegant start style.

Let’s move on to the more eye-catching soleplates, where we find the new X 18+ created with a pixelated soleplate, which is motivated by the Telstar. This will indeed create us remember incredible World Cup when looking at the soleplate soon. But, the best soleplate goes to the Nemeziz 18+, which is created with a innovative bright red color. Well done, adidas!

Nike Launch The PhantomVSN

Traditionally, boot design starts with a sketch, but there is nothing traditional about the brand new PhantomVSN.

phantom vision nike
phantom vision nike

To create something different and better, designer Phil Woodman started conceiving of this boot from the inside out. This resulted in a proprietary new construction that will debut in football with the PhantomVSN and soon be adopted in other Nike footwear.

“We developed an internal Quadfit mesh bootie that conforms to fit most any foot, but retains its shape and will not overstretch,” says Woodman. “Quadfit contains the foot without constricting the foot.”

While not visible from the outside, the impact is immediate on the inside. “Players have long been accustomed to the rigors of breaking in their boots,” explains Woodman, “but the PhantomVSN is match-ready right out of the box.”

Nike PhantomVSN Elite FG

Another unseen item within the PhantomVSN is the appropriately named Ghost Lace system. “We’ve done tremendous amounts of research, talking with players and analyzing data in the lab,” explains Woodman, “and the results are unanimously in favor of lacing to provide that customized fit each player desires.”

To improve upon traditional lacing, the Ghost Lace touchpoints were minimized and a one-pull construction implemented for equal tension all the way down the foot. The laces can then be discretely tucked away to provide an even striking surface.

The hidden innovations on the PhantomVSN reside within a highly texturized Nike Flyknit upper designed to provide premium touch on the ball.

The data-informed placement of the triangulated texture of the Nike Flyknit corresponds with NSRL (Nike Sport Research Lab) data on ball control. This is further emphasized by the boot’s dominant visual cue, the medial triangle. “The triangle roughly covers the surface between 3 prominent bones in the foot: the calcaneus, talus, and first metatarsal head. This provides an intuitive connection to the area our research deems critical to ball control,” says Woodman.

NSRL testing confirms the lower on the triangle one collects the ball, the higher the degree of control for initiating the attack. “When we think of the phantoms we are designing for, we envision a battler who has mastered the art of navigating tight spaces while possessing the vision for attack lanes others may not see. The phantoms would be at ease in a position-less environment and accustomed to multi-directional maneuvers with the ball at their feet,” says Woodman, while noting the influence of small-sided football on the design.

With small-sided football playing such a prominent role in the design of PhantomVSN, it makes sense that the small-sided version of the boot would be constructed with attention to detail and the best technology Nike has to offer, including NikeReact cushioning and an extra durable upper for the rigors of the street.

The cleated version features an entirely new FEA-informed traction pattern to accommodate quick multi-directional cuts. The studs are housed on a lightweight, responsive plate with enhanced zonal support for the foot.

Both the small-sided and cleated versions of PhantomVSN are designed to perform in the elements with ACC (All Conditions Control) coating weather-proofing the product.

The long list of Nike players planning to play in the PhantomVSN includes Philippe Coutinho, Mallory Pugh, Kevin De Bruyne, Fran Kirby, and Leon Goretzka.

Here’s Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 Mark Cavendish Cycling Shoes Revealed

Since when it made its debut a few months ago, the Nike Mercurial has been one of the most “busy” models on the market, as it got several colorways and special editions. One of those was the Nike iD Heritage collection, that homage some of the most iconic models used in the past editions of the World Cup, from 1998 to 2014. And after seeing them at the footballers’ feet in the last months, you should get ready to see them worn by another great sportsman… Mark Cavendish.

Based on the silhouette of the Mercurial Superfly 360, Nike have transformed the boot design into an elite cycling shoe for Cavendish to wear while pedalling through nostalgia town. “20 years ago, during France 98, I saw Ronaldo wearing the first Mercurial. Immediately I wanted them. The R9’s. I was always a Nike fan. They did things differently. They weren’t afraid to change what was normal.” At 33 years of age Cavendish gets his wish in a bespoke move of brilliance.

The first Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 cycling shoe has a full Flyknit construction, built for pure speed in cycling like it is on the football pitch. The cleats come with a cycling sole plate and a special fastening construction.

The design of the boots is a throwback to the famous Ronaldo R9 boots that Nike created for the 1998 World Cup.

It’s not the first time that Cavendish asked Nike a football-inspired shoe, as a few months ago he already worn the Mercurial Superfly 360. This time, though, the level has been lifted up quite a bit and we can’t wait to see what the cyclist and the Swoosh have in mind for the future.

Good luck, Mark. If you take off your helmet at the finish line to reveal a triangle R9 haircut, you’ve won, whatever position you finish in.
